Centre Pivots Show Immediate Efficiencies For Dubbo Turf Grower

Kim Chandler - Thursday, April 19, 2012

Traditionally, turf grown for commercial purposes has been irrigated using labour intensive hand shift pipes. However, Brett Sweeting from Turf the Lot Dubbo is now reaping the benefits of upgrading to Zimmatic Centre Pivots. Turf the Lot leases 2 properties, one with a 186m Zimmatic centre pivot on an 8 hectare paddock and another part circle 285m centre pivot on 14 hectares.Brett said “We are now using half the amount of water we traditionally used and the centre pivot efficiencies is saving us thousands of dollars in labour. Whilst the investment in the Zimmatic centre pivots is a costly initial outlay, labour savings produced by the centre pivot efficiencies pays for the capital outlay very quickly. For example I believe we are saving $2000 per month on labour costs on the 14 hectare property alone.”

Cotton Irrigation with Centre Pivots

Kim Chandler - Thursday, August 18, 2011
Irrigation application on cotton crops is traditionally discharged at a constant rate for an entire field. However, not all plants in a crop may require the same amount of water due to the nature of the crop, soil type, topography, difference in variety, crop condition (eg: disease and water stress) and meteorological conditions.

The obvious benefit to irrigating with a centre pivot or lateral system is that it produces less waste. You get even, precise water application across the rows, rather than too much water at the other end of the field where the flood irrigation commences. You won't lose water to evaporation, and you can control the timing and the amount of water applied. There is also less runoff, helping prevent contamination of the water table and nearby streams.
